Healthy eating isn’t just about how you prepare your dishes but also about what ingredients you use.
A good place to start is to learn your food groups. Vegetables for example are not all alike. Different types contain different amounts of nutrients. You should think of the various types of vegetables as five different subgroups. These subgroups include dark green vegetables, such as romaine lettuce, broccoli, and spinach and turnips.
Then there are the orange vegetables, for example carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes. The next subgroup includes dry beans and peas, such as kidney beans, black beans, white beans, tofu, lentils and soybeans.
Then you have your starchy vegetables, which include corn, potatoes and green peas and the final group houses the likes of mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplants, asparagus and zucchini.

As well as vegetables, there is also a variety of fruits available that should be added to your diet in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. These are also very different in terms of what vitamins and nutrients they contain.
Mixing an assortment of fruits and berries is a great way to get all of the daily nutrients needed instead of just a few. Whether you purchase the fruits fresh or in a can, dried or frozen, the likes of apples, avocado, pineapples, oranges, melons, plums, papaya, pears and berries are a must if you wish to maintain a healthy lifestyle
Fruit juices and homemade or store bought smoothies are also a great way to get your daily dose of fruit, just be sure to purchase freshly squeezed juices or smoothies that contain all natural ingredients. Carbonated juices just won’t give you the same health benefits and such juices are very high in calories and unwanted fatty sugars.
