Men who drink one or two glasses of red wine each day may decrease their risk of lung cancer, even if they are smokers, researchers report. The findings were published in the October issue of the, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

“An antioxidant substance in red wine may help to prevent lung cancer. The findings provide momentum for future research to find out if there is something in red wine that may help to either prevent or treat lung cancer.” said lead researcher Chun Chao.

For their study, researchers collected data of 84,170 men among those 210 were identified as patients of lung cancer.

The researchers came to know, on average, each glass of red wine consumed per month lowers risk of lung cancer by 2 percent.

The greatest reduction was among men who smoked and drank moderate quantity (1 to 2 glasses) of red wine each day. These men lowered their risk for lung cancer by 60 percent, Chao’s group found.

But the scientists cautioned that, it doesn’t mean that it’s fine to smoke or use red wine extensively to prevent lung cancer.

“Men who smoke should stop smoking, even those who drink one or two glasses of red wine per day still face a greater risk of lung cancer than do non-smokers. This study should not be used as an excuse to drink more red wine. Moderation is always the best course.”

Dr. Leonard Lichtenfeld, of American Cancer Society’s said, “Clearly, we aren’t recommending that smokers go out and start consuming large amounts of red wine as a potential protection from getting lung cancer. There are other research reports that show that any alcohol, including red wine, can increase the risk of other cancers such as breast or colon cancer.”

LONDON (Reuters) – A Chinese herbal medicine known as “horny goat weed” is a potent substitute of Viagra for impotent men, Italian researchers said.

The herb has established its repute as a natural aphrodisiac. The research, which did not observe whether the herb truly increases desire, could lead to new drugs to help men get erections, said Mario Dell’Agli, who led the study.

“This could be the natural Viagra. The novelty is that we have synthesized a new molecule that one day may be able to replace Viagra.”

Erectile dysfunction is prevailing worldwide, and drugs like Viagra, Levitra or vardenafil, work by enhancing blood flow to the genitals. But the drugs, which inhibit an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5, which restricts blood flow around the body, including penis, can have side effects such as headache, gastro-intestinal irritations and visual disability including blindness.

The Italian team looked for several plants and herbs reputed to reboot sexual performance. After founding horny goat weed, the researchers rectify a compound in the plant called “icariin” and found, it blocked the erection-inhibiting enzyme.

As the compound specifically blocks the enzyme, it may have fewer side effects than Viagra, known commonly as sildenafil, Dell’Agli said.

“The compound icariin is present in the horny goat weed in large amounts and its activity against (the enzyme) is lower compared to Viagra,” he said. “But the new molecule we synthesized from icariin is as good as Viagra against (the enzyme).”

A study conducted on thirty-five healthy men given paroxetine (Paxil or Seroxat) by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) found that, the percentage of sperm cells with fragmented DNA rose from 13.8 % to 30.3 % after just four weeks treatment.

The researcher, Peter Schlegel and Cigdem Tanrikut of the Cornell Medical Center in New York concluded, “The fertility potential of a substantial proportion of men on paroxetine may be adversely affected by these changes in sperm DNA integrity.”

The study seconds the same doctor’s findings, in 2006, that is two men had developed low healthy sperm count, with the treatment of two different selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

SSRIs like Paxil and Fluoxetine (Prozac), now available globally, are the most frquently prescribed group of antidepressants.

“These medicines remain an important option, in addition to counseling and lifestyle changes, for treatment of depression and this study should not be used to cause unnecessary concern for patients,” a spokesman said. Glaxo is reviewing the study findings, since company hasn’t conducted it.

“Patients should discuss their situation with their doctor before stopping use of their medicine.”

SSRIs have already been known as libido depressor in some men and past researches have also shown that, women using such drugs are more likely to have a low birth weight baby.

Researchers came to know that among 87 healthy men ages 19 to 48, obese were less likely to be a father. Precisely, they exhibit hormonal variation that leads to a reduced reproductive capacity, the researchers report in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

As compare to thinner men, obese had reduced levels of testosterone in their blood, as well as poorer levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), both hormones are essential for reproduction.

Researchers said, these comparatively low levels of LH and FSH are indicative of a “partial” hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a condition in which the testes do not work appropriately due to weak signals from hypothalamus or pituitary gland, two important parts of brain involved in hormone secretion for endocrine system.

Researchers suggest that obesity alone is a key “infertility factor” in so-called healthy men, write Dr. Eric M. Pauli.

When the researchers examined the men for various reproductive hormones, they confirm that the LH and FSH levels are inversely proportional to the obesity. On the other side, increasing obesity can be associated with elevating estrogen levels.

Pauli’s team explained that, excessive body fats increase the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in a man’s blood. Such hormone alterations could signal the brain to reduce or even stop FSH and LH production.

Previous studies have linked obesity with a dampened libido and higher risk of erectile dysfunction, the researchers note. Those effects along with the hormonal alterations seen in this study, could act together to decrease an obese man’s fertility, researcher said.
